I am ready to sell my 2008 4runner. This is such a great truck. Drives through the snow, like it isn't even there. I never really took it offroad, but I'm sure it would be just fine.
So, for the price. I decided to check KBB and NADA and use the lower of the 2. NADA at $7400 is the price I started with.
I lowered the price from there for a couple of repairs, that could be done, if the buyer wants to do them straight away.
I removed $1000 for the timing chain and water pump. My plan was to wait until 230,000 miles. There are currently 218,xxx miles on it now.
The truck spent the vast majority of it's life in Wisconsin. I purchased it 6 or 7 years ago. I washed it frequently in the winters, knowing that rust was going to be an issue if I didn't. There is rust under there, but it is not even close to rotting through.
I also removed $1200 because of the exhaust manifolds. This is a well known problem with the V8s. Something about the factory not having enough room between the pipes to get good welds, and using thin pipes for quicker cat heat up. The reason for the $1200 is to purchase new exhaust manifolds from Doug Thorley. Apparently these are guaranteed not to leak. I had already replaced both manifolds, during my ownership. But over time the problem just came back. Since I didn't drive Runner much, I just left them be. That is to say, the driver's side is leaking for sure.
The 4Runner has snow tires on it right now.
The rims are stock and paint/powder coating is peeling.
There are small lines of rust on the doors, caused by 1 screw in each handle that was not galvanized. So it is rusting away in there, and rusty water is draining down the doors.
The tire pressure light is on. I am really not sure why or how this is. All 5 tires are above 32psi. There is a bundle of wires behind the glove box. If you connect a particular 2, it will turn that light off, basically disabling the sensors. I picked up a tire sensor tool to reprogram the sensors, but couldn't figure out how to fix the problem.
The final issue is, the steering wheel has an inch of play in it. I am very confident of the cause. I tried to explain the fix to an auto shop in town. They were not able to fix it. It has been in for the same fix twice. I think I am bad at describing the solution, because both times I drove away without the problem being fixed. I doubt I can post an external link here, so you can youtube "Toyota 4 Runner Steering Problem Returns - EricTheCarGuy". I am certain this is the problem.
Other than that. This really is a great truck. Comfortable to drive, powerful, and VERY stable in the snow. The heat is hot, the A/C is cold. Aftermarket stereo. Remote start. Leveling kit installed. If you have any questions, send me a text. I can take calls after 4pm.
